A Simple Guide to Aspects

Aspects along with signs and houses are measurements within the chart or circle. A circle consists of 360° and aspects relate to angles between the planets as well as the Ascendant and the Midheaven. These angles in turn can be thought of as the connection between these planetary forces and the way they wish to engage with one another.

Here are the most common aspects you would find in a chart:

Conjunction – An aspect where two or more planets are 0° apart. It is important as this aspect highlights the intense merging and interaction of these planetary energies which are in the same sign. They continually influence one another. Powerful conjunctions are those which involve the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) or the Ascendant. This can lead to further development in the strength of character, will, confidence and healthy assertiveness.

Sextile – An aspect where two planets are separated by an angle of 60°. Usually there will be an interaction between Air and Fire or Earth and Water which are naturally harmonious or compatible to one another. This aspect allows one to be open to new ideas, people or attitudes thus cultivating new learning. A sextile can also enhance creativity by providing an outlet for self expression. Adaptability and flexibility are the keywords with this aspect due to the elements involved.

Square – An aspect of 90° between two planets. It is considered a very powerful aspect because of the tension involved as the planets are residing in different elements that are not naturally compatible. The challenge for the individual with this aspect is to overcome frustration and integrate these reactive energies, combine their influences and release them in a harmonious way. For example the fire and water elements are inharmonious, yet their combined energy can power a steam engine. This aspect is not to be feared. That only restricts you. It is a challenge which has been dealt to you. Think of it as a quest where the reward is the building of character and personal growth. With that, any problem can be faced.

Trine – An aspect where two planets are 120° apart. This is considered to be a very positive aspect due to the planets involved being in the same element, therefore there is an easy flow of energy due to a mutual understanding. No personal adjustments are need to be made to utilise this energy creatively which can lead to a strong sense of contentment and ease. It is a wonderful aspect to have but there is the danger of taking this energy for granted. The relationship between the planets involved must also be considered in a trine especially if one is naturally more dominant than the other. In order to benefit from the creativity this aspect offers in abundance you must motivate yourself to enhancing these natural gifts and abilities.

Quincunx – Sometimes called an Inconjunct it is an aspect of 150° separating two or more planets. It is an interesting aspect as the planets involved will reside in incompatible signs and modalities (Mutable, Cardinal or Fixed) and neither trine nor oppose each other. They are at an impasse, agreeing to disagree, and reconciliation between the planets needs to be met. The function of this aspect is to force you to see where you are wasting your efforts leading to disappointment or feeling a victim of circumstance. It is a subtle aspect and demands you to be selective, organised and even discriminating. Adjustment or compromise is necessary. Focus on the basic needs of the planets involved and draw out their strengths which are ultimately yours.

Opposition – An aspect of 180° between planets. Though the planets are in complimentary elements, they are in an aspect of tension due to their polarity. You could go so far as saying they bring out the worst in each other due to their similarities. It is not unusual to find that an individual with an opposition can project the conflict and uneasiness of the planets onto personal relationships. In order to make this trying aspect work to your benefit you need to look at the planets objectively and take heart. This is one of the easiest aspects to achieve resolution. Transform those energies so they work together rather than against each other. Think of it as a friendship going through an adjustment. Each side needs to mutually appreciate their differences and embrace their similarities.
