It was the best of times, it was the worst of times: Saturn and Pluto in Mutual Reception

When mighty Saturn entered transformational Scorpio on the 6th October 2012 it began to make a rare aspect known as a ‘mutual reception’ with powerful Pluto currently in Capricorn. A mutual reception occurs when two planets form a positive aspect in each other’s ruling sign. Pluto is the ruler of Scorpio and Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn. They are approximately 60 degrees apart – an aspect in astrology known as a sextile.

So, what does this mean for us personally and for the world in general? Both planets are powerful and slow moving so we can expect this mutual reception to last until the 24th December 2014! On a personal level, their influence will depend very much on the sector of your chart the mutual reception occurs in and also whether it impacts on your natal planets (one of our astrologers will be happy to explain this to you). You can start to get an idea of what this means by looking at what both planets represent. Saturn represents structure and authority. Pluto represents transformation and power. Saturn in Scorpio in mutual reception to Pluto in Capricorn will bring about slow adaptation to change, ruthless people and abuses of power, research into exciting new areas which could have long term benefits for all of us, defeat snatched from the jaws of apparent victory and extreme selflessness or extremism in the form of dogma or terrorism. Pluto in the mutual reception will bring about an ‘outing’ of taboos and secrets of those in powerful positions, power struggles involving large corporations or bodies which could see many go to the wall if they don’t transform, and dictators or plutocrats. Think about the fact that Saturn represents restrictions, responsibilities, austerity, duties and also denial. Pluto represents power in all its forms – including abuses of power, sex, charisma, and obsession.

On a soul level this mutual reception can enable us all to transform entire systems and organisations that are no longer working, into something more beneficial for all of us. However, if the transformation is resisted, then Pluto’s energy will literally result in ‘explosions’ that rock many of the structures we took for granted. We can see this happening already in our media.

The last time these two planets were in mutual reception was December 1776 – the time of the American revolution! So we may yet see some kind of revolution taking place that re-defines our global landscape in some way. For us all, the opportunity is there to demolish what no longer works for us and literally create one of the ‘best of times’ we may ever know. Don’t hang on to what no longer serves you, no matter how hard you may have worked to create it. Let Pluto’s energy help you re-define it and Saturn will enable you to build something better and more substantial that rewards you in ways you never imagined possible.
