The 12th House in astrology

12th house in astrology

The 12th house of your chart is associated with the sign of Pisces and ruled by Neptune and what we can say is that there is certainly more going on below the surface of the 12th house than meets the eye. Many of you will already be familiar with many of the themes the 12th house rules: intuition, inspiration, secrets, that which is hidden but nonetheless exists, the spiritual realm, the occult, psychic ability, compassion, empathy and what we would call the ‘higher’ virtues, hidden enemies, and also universal consciousness. The 12th house is often referred to as ‘womb and tomb’ by astrologers as it can tell us a lot about where we were before we were born into this life – and where we are headed next.

One aspect of the 12th house that is often ignored by astrologers is that the 12th is where our spirit guides or Guardian Angels reside. If you stop to think about it, this actually makes perfect sense. The 12th rules the past and that includes our past lives and as it also rules intuition, inspiration and our ‘inner voice’ we begin to see the connection here. Very often that hunch we have or that ‘inner voice’ we hear is our guide or Guardian Angel speaking directly to us.

In the past it was thought that only people who had Venus or Jupiter in the 12th house of their charts were lucky enough to have a Guardian Angel, but I can tell you that isn’t the case. A planet in your 12th will tell you a lot about the energy your Guardian Angel or guide has and very often this can be an energetic vibration we are having problems with integrating – in other words, you may have too much of the energy or not enough and one of the soul tasks your Guardian Angel is here to help you with is to work with them to achieve the right balance of energy in your life. An example of this might be having Mars in the 12th in Pisces. Although the person may strive for peace they may in fact end up getting taken advantage of or walked all over. So, chances are you could have a warrior spirit guide or a Guardian Angel with Archangel Michael energy as you would need to become more assertive without compromising your desire for harmony!

If your chart shows no planets in your 12th house – don’t start thinking that this means you have no guides or Guardian Angels because that isn’t true either! You need to look at where the rulers of your 12th are in your birthchart – the house and the sign and this will tell you a lot about them. Although in modern astrology Neptune is the ruler of the 12th so first look at where Neptune is in your natal chart, you also need to remember that before his discovery Jupiter, planet of luck, higher learning and Guardian Angels was the ruler of both Pisces an the 12th house so look at where Jupiter is also. If you need more information then one of our astrologers would be able to help you with this.

If you are already working with angel cards and want to integrate these into your astrological practice or to just understand what kind of Guardian Angel energy you have around you, then take note of the planets in your 12th house if you have them or the signs Jupiter and Neptune occupy if you don’t have them. What colours or personality traits are associated with these planets/signs? What angels are associated with these qualities or themes? And don’t forget – if you have more than one planet in the 12th this can also mean you have more than one guide or Guardian Angel looking out for you! Remember – the 12th house contains secrets and your Guardian Angel or guides are the secret resource we all have, just waiting to be discovered.
